STEP 2

I used this step to refine the rough outlines which had been laid down in stage one, strengthening the outlines, correcting slight errors and adding texture and variation.

STEP 3

With the 6B pencil I shaded the darkest areas of the owl – the pupils and rims of the eyes, the beak, the circle framing the face and the diagonals extending from the ‘horns’.

STEP 4

This was the most laborious stage of the drawing, requiring a lot of concentration and reference to my source image. With the 2B pencil I began by adding soft hatched lines to the centre of the face, radiating outwards. I then worked on the feather pattern on the top of the head using small scumbling motions with the point of the pencil. Eventually the regular pattern began to take shape, suggesting the texture of the feathers.
